What are my responsibilities as a tenant?
Your tenancy agreement is a contract between you and your landlord. The tenancy agreement gives certain rights to both you and your landlord, for example, your right to occupy the accommodation and your landlord’s right to receive rent for letting the accommodation.
As a tenant you have, contractually obliged, responsibilities that you must adhere to:
Paying rent
This means that for the full duration of the tenancy, you are required to pay the rent as stated on the tenancy agreement.
Periodic Tenancy
The tenancy is a periodic tenancy. This means that your rental agreement will continue indefinitely until notice to end the tenancy is provided.
You will be able to end the tenancy at any point by giving notice.
This must be done:
- so the tenancy ends on a day when the rent is due or the day before the rent is due
- in writing, for example, by letter or email
- You will need to give at least 2 months’ notice.
Report Maintenance
Any repairs to be conducted by the landlord must be reported promptly, in writing, via our website.
Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of the property
The Property must be kept clean and tidy. The cellar/basement must be left clear of rubbish. All rubbish must be put in dustbin liners in the dustbin/wheelie bins provided.
The Tenant must take care of the Property and the Landlord’s furniture. Although sometimes damage can be accidental it can still result in The Tenant being charged for repairs.
Joint liability
Joint liability means that when several parties enter into a Tenancy Agreement, any one of those parties can be held accountable for the entire obligation. This means that when money is owed, the legal responsibility doesn’t always sit with the person responsible.
