A little history of Horsforth

Horsforth’s history stretches back at least as far as 1086, when it was included in the Domesday Book under the name of Horseford due to its important crossing location on the River Aire.

Horsforth’s name derives from the words ‘horse’ and ‘ford’, which refer to the River Aire crossing that is believed to have been used to transport goods from nearby towns such as Bradford and Shipley.

Horsforth was predominantly an agricultural community until the mid-19th century, when it started to develop and expand in the Industrial Revolution. In fact, during the latter half of the 19th century, Horsforth was considered to have the largest population of any village in Britain.

If you’re living in a rented apartment or house in Horsforth and are interested in the history of the town, why not visit Horsforth Village Museum? Home to an inspiring collection of artefacts and displays illustrating the village’s fascinating history.
