How do I keep my home safe from accidents and fire risks?
Your home is one of the places where accidents are most likely to happen. By being aware of potential hazards and taking a few simple precautions, you can greatly reduce the risk of injury or damage.
Slips, Trips and Falls
There are several steps you can take to minimise the risk of slips, trips and falls in your home:
- Keep your living areas tidy. Ensure walkways and shared spaces are free from personal belongings, and secure any cables or leads to prevent trailing.
- Secure rugs and floor coverings. Loose rugs or damaged carpets can slip, wrinkle or curl at the edges, creating a trip hazard.
- Clean up spills immediately. Wipe up liquid or food spills as soon as they occur to reduce the risk of slipping.
- Take extra care on stairs. Stairs are a common area for falls, so always use the handrail when going up or down.
If you notice any health and safety concerns related to the building or its fixtures and fittings, please report them via the maintenance portal.
Fire Safety
Fires can start without warning and spread quickly, posing a serious risk to both life and property. Many fires can be prevented by following these important safety measures:
- Keep hallways and doorways clear at all times to ensure safe escape routes.
- Always keep fire doors closed and never wedge them open.
- Use the extractor fan when cooking and never leave food unattended.
- Avoid cooking if you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Never cover heaters or dry clothes on them.
- Ensure smoke detectors remain uncovered and in good working order.
- Use the bathroom extractor fan when showering, as steam or aerosols such as deodorant can activate smoke alarms.
- Do not use faulty electrical appliances.
- Avoid overloading plug sockets or extension leads.
- Plug heat-generating appliances, such as hairdryers, directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead.
- Report any faults with fire doors or fire safety equipment immediately.
- Never block emergency access or escape routes.
- Familiarise yourself with fire exits and designated assembly points.
- Smoke or vape only in designated outdoor areas and never indoors.
- Report maintenance issues promptly, including fire alarm faults or low batteries. While routine inspections are carried out, batteries may run out between visits. If your alarm begins to beep, report it immediately.
