How do I complete my Right to Rent in the UK check?

A Right to Rent check is a requirement introduced by The Home Office in 2016 to reduce the number of people working and living in England illegally.

Landlords need to check that all tenants who occupy their properties have legal status to live in the UK. This means that before you can rent a property from us, we must complete a Right to Rent in the UK check for all people, over the age of 18, who will be living in the property.

There are several different ways to complete this check:

If you have an in-date GBR or IRE passport

With your in-date GBR or Irish passport in hand (photographs cannot be accepted), you can complete a remote or in-person check.

In PersonRemote
Your passport can be checked in person by a team member. You will need to be present for this check. Remote checks are completed by the certified digital identity service provider (IDSP), Trust ID.

After completing a remote check, Pickard Properties will contact you to schedule a short video call to conduct a liveness check.

If you are a British or Irish citizen without a valid passport

You must be able to provide either:

A) One original form of documentation from List A (acceptable identification documents)
B) or two original forms of ID from List A Group 2.

Once you have the original identification document(s), please contact our office to schedule an appointment.

If you are an overseas national

As an overseas national, you can usually provide a Right to Rent share code to prove your right to rent.

To complete your check with a share code, you should email pickard@pickardproperties.co.uk with:

  1. Your Right to Rent Share Code
  2. Your date of birth
  3. Confirmation of when you are available to complete an in-person or remote check to confirm your liveness.

A manual check can also be completed with your original immigration documents.
