How to get the best student discounts

Being a student means you can run into money problems and have to learn how to budget. Luckily, there are plenty of student discount deals to help you save.

Whether you’re wanting to treat yourself to some new clothes or need the price knocking down on your grocery shopping, there are lots of discount options out there.

This article will focus on what student discount is and how you can get the best available deals.

What is student discount?

Student discounts are savings deals that are offered to students. Generally speaking, student discounts are available to students at university or college.

Student discount is available online and in person. It is a great opportunity to save money and still be able to buy things you need or want.

Can apprentices get student discount?

If you’re doing an apprenticeship, you can look into getting an NUS Apprentice extra card. The card is £11 for a year and can be used at hundreds of high street shops and online, which is a great way to stretch your hard-earned money.

If you are doing a degree apprenticeship, you can access further student discounts and deals by using your university email address.

How to get student discount

Many places will accept your student ID card as proof and give you a discount based on that. However, many places will want to see membership cards or an online ID, so it is good to be prepared.

Below are some examples of other ways to get student discount.

Unidays

Unidays is a free app and website. If you’re above 16 and studying at university or college, you can register and receive exclusive offers and discounts. All you need is your student email address!

Student Beans

Similarly to Unidays, Student Beans is entirely free to use. By using your student email address, you can register for student discount.

Totum

Totum is the new name for the card formerly known as the NUS extra. For a year-long card, it is £14.99 and has discounts for over 200 brands. A Totum yearlong subscription also comes with a free International Student Identity Card (ISIC).

International Student Identity Card (ISIC)

An International Student Identity Card (ISIC) offers discounts in more than 100 countries. There are two options with this card. You can have a “digital” version which you keep on your phone that costs £12, or a physical copy is £15.

Make sure to ask

Even if you can’t see a sign or advertisement of student discount, it is always worth asking. Some places are happy to provide a discount if you ask and show your student ID!

How much can student discount help you save?

Student discounts vary from place to place, but you could receive up to 40% off! Whenever you’re buying something, it is worth checking for. Any discount is a good saving!

However, just because you can get student discount doesn’t mean you should stop checking for other deals. By checking prices across various shops and being wary, you could save even more.

Often, shops will use “was” prices or RRP comparisons, which exaggerate the discount. Being smart with your shopping can help you avoid rubbish deals.

Are there any rules for getting student discount?

The only rule for getting student discount is that you are a valid student. With Unidays and Student Beans, you need to keep your studying information up to date and validate your identity with your student email.

Make sure to have your student ID on you, have valid details, and you are set to go ahead and save some money!
