Pickard Properties has won the coveted Student Accommodation Scheme category at Insider Media’s Yorkshire Placemaking Awards for its landmark development, Carlton Hill.
Carlton Hill, a purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) complex, stands out for its sustainability and student wellbeing focus. The 604-bed development, which welcomed its first residents at the start of the 2023-24 academic year, is located near the city centre and the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University.
Taking place on 13th June at the LIFE Centre Events in Bradford, Carlton Hill was in distinguished company at the awards evening after being shortlisted alongside The Leatherworks in Leeds, a collaborative project by Urbanite Living, headoffice3, and Homes for Students, as well as Live Oasis, St Albans Place in Leeds, which was developed by YPP Lettings and Farrans Construction.
As one of Leeds’ most sustainable student housing projects, Carlton Hill boasts an EPC A rating and is designed to minimise carbon emissions. This all-electric facility is future-proofed to leverage renewable energy, with nearly half of its needs met by low or zero carbon technologies, including a large solar PV array and Air Source Heat Pumps.
Reflecting Leeds City Council’s 20-minute neighbourhood’ vision, Carlton Hill promotes sustainable transport with pedestrian pathways connecting to the city centre and nearby universities. Carlton Hill also offers spacious living areas, a fully equipped gym, and beautifully landscaped ‘sky gardens’ and a roof terrace.
Carlton Hill represents a significant milestone for Pickard Properties, which has a rich history in Leeds’ student accommodation market. This award-winning development replaces a smaller 239-bed student residence and adds to the company’s extensive portfolio of around 300 residential properties in Leeds, many of which serve the student community.
The recognition at the Yorkshire Placemaking Awards is a testament to Pickard Properties’ commitment to creating high-quality, sustainable student accommodation that aligns with Leeds’ ambitions for a greener future.
Miles Pickard, Director of Pickard Properties said: “We are incredibly honoured that Carlton Hill has been recognised by the Placemaking Awards. Our goal was to create a PBSA scheme that not only meets the evolving needs of students but also contributes positively to the city’s sustainability goals.
“Our partnership with Unipol Student Homes has been pivotal in developing a community-centric, wellbeing-focused environment at Carlton Hill. We are delighted with this award and the positive impact our development has on Leeds.”
